Examples of things that start off simple and become more complex?
I need examples of things we can readily identify with that started off simple, and as time went on became more and more complex. Life is definitely one. But let’s move away from that and give examples of other things in our universe.
I generally want to support the argument that all things in our universe start off simple and over time become increasingly more complex.
One word: Snowflake.
A snowflake starts out as a simple six-sided water crystal. (The six-sided shape is the result of the angles of the H and O atoms in the H2O molecule.) But as the crystal falls through a cloud, more and more water molecules cling to it. The pace at which molecules cling to the growing crystal depends on (a) the humidity, or density of water, at different parts of the cloud, and (b) the precise temperature at the different parts of the cloud. As a result the six corners all accumulate the identical pattern of water molecules.
The result is a very complex water crystal.
So from a simple six-sided crystal, the result is complexity like this:

Other examples:
A solar system: It starts out as an amorphous, disk-shaped cloud, but coalesces into something more complex … like our little ‘snowflake’ of a solar system:
* Stable star at the center consisting of Hydrogen and Helium in a state of nuclear fusion;
* 4 Smaller inner planets (rocky planets) consisting of heavier elements with small number of moons.
* 4 Larger outer planets (gas giants) consisting of lighter elements with large number of moons.
* Large swarm of smaller objects outside the gas giants.

Human artifacts that change by increments (evolve):
* A city.
* A political system.
* The French language.
* A large corporation.
* A stock market.
* The economy of the United States.
* The Internet.
* The desktop computer.
* The automobile combustion engine.
* The carburetor.
I lump these all together because some people might disqualify them as products of human intelligence. But this is missing the point. These were not originally “designed” to be complex. They *GOT* complex because of small incremental changes. So much so that some of them are “overcomplex” … more complex than than any of its “designers” would have intended. Some are so complex (like the stock market, the Internet, or the U.S. economy), that no single human being actually fully understands it, much less can claim to be its “designer.”
