Is there DVD anti-copy software that can erase all files on the disc if attempted to copy?

I have a DVD of my vacation that is labeled with a message which reads, “This DVD is protected by anti-copy software. Any attempt to copy it will result in the destruction of all media files contained on the disc.” Could there be any truth to this claim?

It’s possible to create such a monster, but extremely complicated and would require a team of software developers. Sony tried one with audio CDs that simply made the data inaccessible unless you used their program to play. It was highly criticized and lawsuits pursued because Sony decided to use a rootkit to acomplish this… which is probably the nastiest kind of virus because it installs and runs both without your consent and is very hard to detect normally, even with the best antivirus programs. But I digress. I’d say leave the label on your disc, since it will be the best deterrent in any case. If someone wants to copy it enough they will figure out a way.

It is possible to erase a DVD-R or DVD+R if you can take full control of a drive and simply “burn over” already recorded data. Again, very expensive to pay a team of developers to create.

You could have a program that linked in autorun and would execute a command to erase a DVD-RW disc unless the correct password is entered.

A question to you… what was so great on this vacation that you taped that I’d want to bootleg it?
