I went to Ukraine recently and bought a Russian copy of a DVD?

It’s official, not bootlegged. Anyway, when I put it in the dvd player, it says to eject the disc because the regional code is different. So I tried my laptop and it asked if I would like to change my regional code on my DVD rom to be able to watch the movie – my question is, would that be permanent? I don’t think it would, strictly because of how simply it posed the question. But I want to be sure. I don’t want a Ukrainian laptop. Thanks!

A DVD player on a computer will allow you to set the region code a limited number of times. After you set it that LAST time, it is then “fixed” to that region. I would Google “region free DVD” and get a programme that over-rides the setting so that the reader thinks the DVD is region free. My DVD-RW has never been set to ANY region. If I don’t have my region-free programme running, it indicates that I need to set the region and I can set it up to 5 times. I’ve chosen not to set it at all.

EDIT: As regards the answer recommending “VLC Player”…I turned off my programme that makes my DVD-RW not need to be set. I then ejected and reinserted a DVD and turned on my DVD ripper. I got a warning that no region was set, asking if I wanted to set the region. I clicked “no”. I then opened the disc using VLC media player. It opened the menu. I clicked “Wide Screen”. I then repeated, clicking “Full Screen”. In both instances, I only had one minor problem. The first thing to come up was the “MPAA rating”. Then it was a wee sluggish before actually playing the feature (unlike a DVD player). Aside from that, it played fine. It would be akin to trying to play a DVD on a standalone DVD player and have it hesitate between hitting “play” and actually playing. Apparently, the VLC Player solution will work fine. I would try THAT first, and if it DOESN’T work, then find a programme that over-rides the region setting. A region setting programme will likely be a trial, unless you purchase the programme.
