How To Make Absinthe

How To Make Absinthe by Distillation?
Distilling Absinthe liquor at home is not to be recommended and is actually illegal in many countries, including the United States, unless you have a license. Absinthe is produced by distilling herbs like green aniseed, wormwood, anise and fennel with an alcohol base and then adding extra herbs like lemon balm, petite wormwood and hyssop to color the liquor.
To use the steeping method, you need to mix wormwood with a neutral alcohol (vodka or Everclear) and let the mixture steep for up to 2-3 weeks in a cool dark place. Filter out the wormwood and then add other classic Absinthe herbs such as aniseed, fennel, anise, hyssop, angelica and lemon balm. Keep it aside for a week or so and then filter and taste.
Making Absinthe by steeping herbs and filtering will not make a proper Absinthe because you are not distilling the drink.
How Do I Make Absinthe Using A Herbal Blend Kit?
There are many different companies online selling Absinthe kits.Thujone is a chemical that is found in the wormwood and is speculated to cause psychedelic effects. Studies have shown that thujone shows its adverse affects only if consumed in large quantities.
Mostly kits provides you with an Absinthe herbal blend to mix with alcohol, an Absinthe finishing blend and a micron filtration system to filter the liquor. No distillation is required so this will not make a true Absinthe, it is only a bit hard to get enough thujone from the herbs.
