Wars Trilogy

Is there supposed to be another Star Wars trilogy?
I heard from somewhere that there’s supposed to be 3 more episodes because in the books it continues from where the 6th part left off.
Is this true?
It depends … do you want to know the truth or the latest version of George’s “revisionist history”. In his newest version of revisionist history he claims that there were only ever supposed to be 6 movies and that they were all together to tell the Tragedy of Darth Vader. The truth however is a lot more complicated.
When Lucas first wrote the story line for SW it was a 12 episode mega saga. He wanted to tell it in the same fashion as the old Flash Gordon series back in the day. He realized that wouldn’t work so after getting a little support from Fox he made what we now know as ep IV. Whether or not if it was supposed to actually be ep I or not is something that only Lucas knows and won’t tell but there is verifiable proof that the first working title for what we now know as ep V was “2 of 12″ … in the end it is irrelevant anyways. A New Hope is different from the other movies in two ways. First it is the only one of them that can be seen as a stand alone movie. By that I mean it had a definite beginning and a definite end. If it had flopped as many, including Lucas to a certain extent, thought it would nobody would have had to know that there was more to the story. Second it is the only one of the movies that comes even remotely close to being told as the story line went. After that Lucas made two HUGE changes that led to the 6 movie epic saga that we have now. The first was to combine the characters of Darth Vader & Anakin Skywalker into one … originally they were two different characters. This change also took any back story of the characters that were in the prequels and threw most of it out the window as the main theme of that back story was about two Jedi, Obi-Wan & Anakin, who were best of friends and who were betrayed by Obi-Wan’s apprentice Darth Vader who killed Anakin Skywalker. In any event this change led to the fabled “9 episode” story. The first trilogy was to be about the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker, the second trilogy was to be about the rise of Luke Skywalker and the redemption of Anakin Skywalker, the third trilogy was to be about the “other Skywalker” that Yoda talks about in ep V. While writing the final duel between Luke and Vader in ep VI Lucas got stumped on what he could have Vader say to Luke that would cause Luke to attack his father in a dark side fueled rage. To solve this problem he made Leia the “other Skywalker” and had Vader threaten her. That change eliminated the third trilogy leaving us with the 6 movies … end of story.
You mention the books of the SW EU (Expanded Universe of books). One thing needs to be made CRYSTAL clear in regards to this … the movies were NOT, repeat, WERE NOT made from existing books, the books were written about the movies. There are almost 200 books out there that take the story into the future after the events of the OT and into the past before the events of the movies. The first of these books to come out was the Thrawn Trilogy written by Hugo Award winning author Timothy Zahn. The titles are “Heir To The Empire”, “Dark Force Rising”, & “The Last Command”. This is the book set that reignited the SW fan base. All of the books that have followed are all part of the official story of SW because they don’t get published without the consent of Lucas. In fact in 1995 Lucas considered making the Thrawn Trilogy into ep 7 – 9 but one call to Harrison Ford killed that idea as he said he would not be able to reprise his role as Han Solo because he was too busy with other projects at the time. Lucas will never give the Thrawn Trilogy the title of episodes 7 – 9 but he HAS given it the tag of “official continuation of the SW story”.
May The Force Be With You …
EDIT: I have to say that you’ve gotten some severely wrong answers to your question. The answer given by “Curt Hennig” is absolute garbage … not one single word has any truth to it … it’s straight from the SuperShadow archives and supershadow is the biggest fraud on the net when it comes to SW. The answer given by “Steve J” is another that is high on opinion and very light on fact, actually I don’t think there is a single true fact in his answer. The answer given by “bri time baby 3000″ is correct to a point, a point about the size of the head of a pin. Lucas is indeed working on a live action TV show, it was supposed to debut in the fall of 2010 but that date has been pushed back to fall of 2011. This will NOT be a “series based off of the original trilogy” It will be set in between ep III & ep IV and will tell the story of how the rebel alliances came to be and their many battles against the Empire leading up to the events of ep IV.
