How do I make my horse like water?
Hello, my name’s Courtney! I’m 14 years old and recently bought my first horse. She’s a 13 year old quarter horse mare named Spirit. I ride western pleasure and we’re usually out in the pasture for a couple hours. I tried to hose her down after we rode but she kept shying away from the water. All the horses I’ve ridden have loved baths! Any tips on how to get her used to the water hose?
First wait until a really hot day to try and get her to enjoy it. If she has a bad experience the first time then she may never grow to enjoy it.
Second start with the water at a gentle stream. You do not want it to spray or splash upon impact. You just want it to pour over her.
Third, start low with the hooves and legs. Gradually move up as she relaxes. When she tenses stop moving up and just wait until she relaxes. When she relaxes take it away for a little while. When you start again start low but you can bring it up faster if she does not tense. If she tenses then hold it at that level and wait until she relaxes.
Keep it up until you can wash her.
