How can I burn an avi file directly onto dvd?

I wish to burn some avi files directly onto a dvd without going through the whole conversion process since my dvd player supports it. I’ve tried using programs such as divx (since I know some people who have been successful) and other burning programs to burn as normal data, with no success. When I tried with both divx and Nero, the burning process starts but stops at around 13% or so.

Nero will automatically convert your video into dvd format. The only thing I can think of is to write the video as a data dvd, there would be no conversion needed.
